Instagram isn’t just about cool photos. To really captivate your audience, you have to create engaging writing as well. Whether you want your caption to inspire, promote, or cause your users to take action is up to you. Whatever you want from your users, you’re not going to get it without good writing. As a writer myself, I know the value of creating content that other people want to read. The massive amount of people who use Instagram proves that we are visual creatures, inspired by what we see. That includes what we read. If you feel like your following has reached a standstill, perhaps it’s time to take a look at your writing style. Read on to learn how engaging writing can enhance your following.
Some of my friends who have large followings insist that people don’t care about their captions. I believe they are totally in denial. A quality Instagram caption can make your post go viral. A very commonly asked question on Google is: How do posts go viral on Instagram? The answer is in understanding your audience, and finding a unique voice that caters to that audience. You simply can’t do that without engaging writing! For example, I have very few followers on Instagram (not that I’m bitter about it, or anything like that lol), but I use the platform to share my writing. I know that’s what my followers want to see because my posts with poetic captions always get more likes than a fun photo with a boring caption.
If you want more Instagram followers, you have to market yourself. And what would marketing be without quality copy? I’m not saying you have to type out a section of a novel, but you need some copy that will make your followers do something. If you don’t, they’ll probably just keep scrolling. What could be worse than that?!
Let’s take Jennifer Aniston’s Instagram introduction post, for example. Her caption is so simple but gathered a lot of attention. Not only did it seamlessly promote her profile, but it also promoted her known and loved show Friends as well. She used engaging writing to make her presence known to her followers. That’s why we love you, Jennifer! The show Friends, and Jennifer Aniston herself, don’t need an introduction. Yet, her caption in combination with the cast reunion photo went viral. I have no doubts that if she had used a boring caption, she wouldn’t have gained as big of a following as quickly as she did because of the caption.
Still not sure why engaging writing matters? Think of it as a way of telling your followers what your photo can’t. Even if you post a cute photo, you’re not giving your followers all of the information. Engaging writing is a way of further connecting with your followers. It prompts them to like your photo or comment on it. If you have no writing, then your followers don’t have anything to respond to.
That’s that on that, in my opinion. Engaging writing will take your Instagram game to the next level. You don’t have to be a genius at writing, but you do have to have some smarts. Get your followers excited about following you and go write something ASAP!
