Since 2010, Devon Rodriguez has been drawing strangers on the subway, “as part of his ‘Subway Series.'” As an NYC artist, he had gotten the idea from his high school teacher who inspired him to draw sketches as a way to develop his portfolio. His videos have now gone viral, especially at the height of the pandemic. “I’ve been doing these sketches since 2010 but they really just started taking off online in the past five or six months,” Rodriguez tells TimeOut, but “six months ago, I had about 30,000 followers on Instagram and now I have 1.6 million.”
Let’s take a look at some of his videos, given the extent to which they’ve reached millions of people. Moreover, if you ever find yourself on the 6 train, “a remnant of his many years commuting between the Bronx and Manhattan,” you might meet him.
