An Idea during Quarantine
Most of us understand the concept of quarantine boredom: nothing to do and no one to see. But for Trippy Tuesday founders Ruth and Sam, quarantine was a time of creativity and exploration. Born out of boredom, Trippy Tuesday Store offers a line of 4 different body normative candles through their Etsy.com shop. They have a hope to add many more body types as their business grows. Pholiotina, Galerina, Plutonia, and Mycena are the names of each candle, sticking with the theme of different kinds of Fungus.
Trippy Tuesday candles are beautiful decoration pieces that remind us that all bodies deserve to be appreciated. Ruth and Sam wanted to create a sustainable company that serves as an alternative to bigger companies. Their main goal was to create candles of real bodies in many shapes and sizes. Ruth and Sam wholeheartedly believe that all bodies are beautiful. Hand-designed and hand-poured in London, Ruth and Sam are currently the only employees. Due to the lack of employees, they are forced to work hard to keep up with demand, which is impressive considering they’ve had at least 1,800 sales in just a few months of being up and running.
Each candle is also 100% vegan and made from Soy Wax. With help from a friend, the pair designed and had their moulds 3D printed in order to portray authentic bodies. Also, made from recycled materials, Trippy Tuesday uses 100% sustainable packaging.
Individual candles go for about $35 USD with the option to purchase more unique ones for around $50 USD.
These are two of Trippy Tuesday’s newer candles, named Mycena and Plutonia, which feature realistic body types that are inclusive and aesthetically gorgeous. To immediately elevate any space, all that is needed is for one of these girls to sit on a shelf or a desk. Visibility is a huge point of discussion in the recent past, and these candles serve as a constant reminder that all bodies are beautiful. With their main marketing strategy being Instagram, they have garnered roughly 15,000 followers on the app where they post behind the scenes clips and more info about the process. Even though they have competitors, their advantage is that at 12 cm tall, their candles are bigger than others on the market. Each candle also burns longer than its competitors, that is if you decide to burn such a beautiful piece. With 202 reviews on their Etsy, they have a rating of five stars because of the time and care they put into each candle. Because of their rapid success, the store had to shut down to catch up with orders from December 14th to December 22nd, likely due to the amount of holiday gift orders. Ruth and Sam are always creating new designs and styles for each candle as well. They have come up with glittered bodies, marbled bodies, flowered bodies, and even a Valentine’s Day line with hearts hand-painted onto each candle. There is an option for almost any occasion, and a candle would make an incredible gift for a loved one to remind them of their own beauty and power.
Works of Art
These are the other two body types currently for sale, Galerina, and Pholiotina. These girls were the originals that put Trippy Tuesday on the map and made them so popular. Works of art themselves, these candles make it easy to remember that everybody is art, just the way it is. The postcard they include in each box even says so, in case you forget. Ruth and Sam have made it clear on their Etsy that their values for the brand include sustainability, representation, and independence. This comes across perfectly through the art they create. These pieces are the perfect gift to give and also the perfect item to buy for yourself. This women-owned business is just getting started, but it won’t be slowing down any time soon.
