The app that is taking over…
Social media is a great tool for creators. It provides a platform to gain awareness, share content, and create a following. However, one platform this year has truly stood out beyond the others: TikTok. The platform was officially added to the app store years prior under Music.ly, which was then bought by a Chinese company, ByteDance, in 2017 rebranding into the TikTok of today. Throughout 2020, TikTok was the app to be on. Everyone downloaded it no matter the age, interest, or technical affluence…that is unless you had better things to do with your time during quarantine which is probably not true.
Many people have found success on the app; Success that has now turned into careers. Famous TikTokers are making more money than they could have ever imagined after downloading the app. Feeds are made up of short videos between 15-60 seconds with dance trends, life hacks, travel content, skits, or everyone’s guilty pleasure…cringy thirst traps. I mean they are cringy, but they’re viral for a reason!
Here are this year’s Top 10 TikTokers of 2020
1. Charlie D’Amelio
Charlie D’Amelio came to fame after going viral with her dance videos. Now 16, she began posting to TikTok at the age of 15. She now has over 104 million followers and puts out content on average at least once a day. She is originally from the east coast but moved out to LA this year to become a full-time content creator alongside her sister who is on the list as well. Nevertheless, If you know what TikTok is you’ll have heard of Charlie.
2. Addison Rae
Addison Rae is the TikToker that every heterosexual male wants to date and every female wants to look like. She started posting dance videos having a background in competitive dance but soon moved out to expanding her content to lip-syncing videos, dancing with her mom (who also has a major following on the app), to random daily life videos. In fact, Addison Rae even has become apparent besties with Kourtney Kardashian!
3. Zach King
Zach King originally got famous on the sadly missed, old best friend…vine. His 6-second videos made him super popular and when TikTok hit the scene people were ready with open arms to welcome Zach King videos back into their lives. He makes entertaining content based on magic and illusion!
4. Spencer X
Earning his fame from beatboxing, Spencer X is a self-titled “Mouth Music Man.” His original beats and take on recreating everyday sounds with beatbox impressions have brought him to a following of 50.5 million on TikTok. When he’s not making music with his mouth, he at times features his family or even participates in some of the dance challenges.
5. Loren Gray
Known for her stunning appearance, dancing videos, and makeup tutorials Loren Gray has 50.3 million TikTok followers. Besides that, she also has her own jewelry brand along with original music at the young age of 18.
6. TikTok
Making it to the list, and rightfully so, is TikTok’s very own verified account. The account promotes the app’s upcoming events, follows new trends, and shares hashtags on certain projects. Also, it even explains how to use the app’s newest features so you can keep creating.
7. Bella Poarch
Bella Poarch is a 23-year-old American-Filipino who only joined TikTok in April of 2020. Within those few months, she has gained 50.3 million followers. Her videos consist of lip-syncing and dancing, all averaging millions of likes. Also, the influencer works with different fashion brands, video games, and music producers.
8. Dixie D’Amelio
An older sister to dancing TikTok sensation, Charlie, Dixie D’Amelio has made it on the list as well. After getting a following of 47.3 million, Dixie is trying to turn her internet success into a music career. Besides stepping into the music industry, Dixie got her start after posting videos with her sister and other famous TikTokers.
9. Will Smith
Yes, Will Smith, Grammy award-winning actor is HUGE on TikTok. With 45.8 million followers he posts content that not only has comedic sketches but also has a lot of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air content. Smith even has an even bigger following than his two kids Jaden and Willow.
10. Riyaz.14
Riyaz.14 got his followers after posting videos on his account lip-syncing and acting. He’s only 17 years old and has 43.7 million followers. Originally from Bhutan, he was regarded as one of the “top 5 TikTokers to follow in India.”
