Are you looking for somewhere to submit your summer photography? Great! It can be hard to get your name out into the creative world. Many artists dream of being shown in a gallery, or at least someplace more public than their own home. Lucky for you, these five places are accepting open calls, so you can submit your photos and hopefully get your work out there. What’s great about these opportunities is that they don’t focus on past experience. They just want quality photos, regardless of how long you’ve been photographing or whether or not you have a large following. Get your creative juices flowing, and don’t be afraid to reach out! You never know what’s going to happen if you take the first step. Don’t sleep on these opportunities!
Hot Summer City
I heard about this open call for summer photography from Bushwick Community Darkroom in Brooklyn. Rafael Fuchs is curating this exhibit along with Vestige Gallery in Pittsburgh. They are looking for photos that showcase the “essence” of summertime. That can be street photography that captures cities coming alive in the warmer months. On the other hand, they’re also looking for photos that show the less aesthetically pleasing side of summertime, for example, the overwhelming heat. If you have summer photography that fits this theme, then go ahead and submit today! The deadline is June 20th.
The Boulder We Love
Shout out to my home state of Colorado! The exhibit “The Boulder We Love” is all about showing why Boulder is one of the happiest places in America. They are looking for summer photography that captures what makes Boulder special. If you like nature photography that captures Colorado in the summer, you should definitely submit. R Gallery is looking for photos to show in this exhibit from June 30-August 15th.
The theme of this exhibition, on view at Watermark Art Center in Minnesota, is ecological issues. As humans, our habits have left an impact on the Earth–sometimes in negative ways, and sometimes in positive ways. This exhibition is all about showing why it’s important to preserve the Earth. Applicants who work with any type of medium can apply, but summer photography might be the most powerful way to showcase how the Earth has healed because of our actions.
Atlanta Photography Group is looking for summer photography that shows the excitement of the first summer since the pandemic. Now that many people are vaccinated, restrictions are starting to lift in a lot of states. Life is beginning to feel more normal, just in time for summer! This open call gives you a good excuse to go outside into the hot sun and take some photos. They recently extended the deadline to submit to July 10, so hurry to their website before you forget!
FRESH Annual Summer Exhibition
Only 5 photographers are accepted to be in this exhibit, so this one is a little more cutthroat. But, if you’re interested, you shouldn’t let that stop you! Klompching Gallery in New York is looking for emerging, or already established artists who want to have their work shown in the gallery world. They are seeking out summer photography that feels fresh. It can be intimidating submitting to a gallery that is only accepting a limited number of photographers, but even if your work isn’t chosen at least you know you tried your best.
Which of these open calls are you going to submit to? One of my favorite parts of summer is finding out about all of the cool exhibitions that are going on. I just might submit some of my photography myself!
