You’ve seen all of the Instagram models living your dream. I mean, what’s better than working from home? Posting on social media? Making a profit from a brand? And you may be wondering how to start collaborating with brands as well. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need a big following to get noticed. Here’s how you can get started with no experience:
It’s All About You
First, consider the area you would like to be involved in. Whether it’s cosmetics, clothing, or anything in between, you must have a niche. Use social media to your advantage. And trust me: there are many ways to put yourself on the map. Instagram isn’t the only way! Hear me out, start a blog. A blog is a fantastic way to get noticed. By having your own blog, you have a greater chance of standing out to brands. Well, what if my blog is brand new and I barely receive any views? Between the two of us, your blog’s amount of views does not matter. In fact, posting product reviews on your blog as a newbie will show these brands your talent. And no, you do not need money to create your own blog. Some free options include WordPress, Wix, and Blogger.
In addition to your blog, it’s time to spice up your Instagram feed. In the social media world, looks do matter. If this means you have to delete your nostalgic photos from the good ol’ high school days, it’s time to make that sacrifice. Don’t know where to start? Planning out your Instagram feed is fairly easy. Treat your Instagram profile similar to a mood board. This is where VSCO comes in handy. Since VSCO has fairly the same layout as an Instagram profile, it can be useful to plan out and preview your feed.
Secondly, who is your audience or target audience? With this being said, your audience isn’t really considered an audience unless they are genuinely interested in the type of items you are sponsoring.
These two factors will help give you an idea of which companies you will go after.
Research Different Companies
No, you do not need 10k followers or a prior experience. However, starting small will help, especially if you have a very small audience. Think of it as job searching. You must pitch to companies that are open minded to working with beginner influencers.
Every brand is different (just like how every job is different). Therefore, each brand scouts based on the influencer’s looks, such as – height, weight, personal style (and everything in between). I mean, a curly hair brand will not use someone with pin-straight hair to sponsor them, for obvious reasons.
Now, of course, there’s more to it than looks. In order to get noticed, start acting like an influencer. Once you have a brand in mind, explore their Instagram feed and memorize their selected ambassadors. Do you notice anything in particular in that ambassador’s post? Notice which hashtag they use, as this would help you figure out the brand’s hashtag motto.
Let’s use Aerie as an example. Above is a side by side of the same image. The subject @comolaleslie is strutting Aerie apparel. In addition to this, she has hashtagged a few Aerie famous sayings… “#aeriereal, #aerieambassador” and has even tagged @Aerie. By doing so, she was lucky enough to be reposted on the Aerie Instagram profile.
Now, I know what you’re thinking… Aerie is one of the biggest brands and they’ll never notice you. False! Take this tip from a former Aerie employee (surprise!I know all of the insider secrets) : Aerie is looking for confident, body positive women and it’s practically easier to get noticed by them than it is to get into the school of your dreams.
Use this same method for any brand you’re interested in, and you’re kind of guaranteed to being noticed!
Pitch & Contact
By now, you should have a rough list of which companies you can begin with. Now, it’s game time. Talk to the owner with confidence! For instance, this can either be done via email or a direct message.
- Introduce yourself : Make sure to link your social media profiles (including your blog)
- Describe who your audience is (on all social media platforms)
- Share your feedback with their brand (like a salesperson, you want the company to know that you know about their brand)
- What do you bring to the table? Explain how they can benefit from you, and what you would like in return.
Keep in mind, you are a beginner, so think small and work your way up.
Consider “Working” for Free
Now, I know what you’re thinking – no one likes working for free. In fact, think of this as the internship level. Most companies will start with sending you a product in exchange for a social media post about that product. In doing so, you can add this experience to your influencer resume and start charging later on!
Engagement is Key
Once you post products, your audience will most likely want more information. It is best to not withhold any information. Engaging with your audience will form trust and a bond with them.
