Some people are absolutely amazing cooks. Others, well, their talents lay elsewhere. Whether you’re a master chef, need to be diligent when following recipes, or are best suited for microwave dinners, everyone can use a good cooking hack. TikTok, home to amazing cooks, and FoodTok is here to help. Here are 5 TikTok cooking hacks that everyone needs to try.
It’s Hot, Then It’s Cold
Even the most experienced chefs have had a pot of boiling water overboil. In order to avoid piping hot water from spilling over the edges and getting all over (or if you have a gas stove, extinguishing the flame) there’s a simple solution. Throw an ice cube in. That’s right, the cube will immediately lower the temperature and stop the bubbling.
Butter Tastes Grate
If you’re like me, you keep your butter in the fridge. The issue: it’s so hard to spread! The next time you make toast, stop and try this trick to make your butter spread on like, well, butter! Instead of slicing the butter and trying to spread it, grab a grater. That’s right. Grate your butter on! Not only will the friction heat up the butter, but the now-thinly grated spread will be infinitely easier to distribute.
Avacodon’t Go Bad
Sometimes you just don’t need to use your entire avocado all at once. So, you either end up throwing it out immediately or putting it in the fridge just for it to go brown by the next day. Life hack: Put lemon juice on the avocado before wrapping it up, and it’ll preserve it for an extra few days.
Mincing garlic is something that I have yet to master, and the amount of chopping makes my hand cramp up just thinking about it. Did you know that you can get perfectly minced garlic every single time? And, with less effort? Just grab a zester or, my favorite kitchen tool, the cheese grater, and grate/zest the garlic. You’ll get a perfectly minced product in half the time.
Don’t Strain Yourself!
Straining pasta water just got easier than it already was, if that’s even possible. When dumping out the pasta and water into the strainer, not only does hot water splash everywhere, but you always end up loosing a couple of stray noodles. But, not anymore! Did you know you could just put the strainer in the pot and flip it? Yep, instead of placing the strainer in your sink, just put it in the pot and flip it upside down. There’s less splashing, and you don’t lose a single ziti.
